Trane in Grand Rapids, MI is offering a SkillBridge Internship for an Area Service Manager (Learning Role).  In this internship, you will gain hands-on exposure by shadowing and supporting experienced leaders across Service operations. This program is focused on learning and development—not direct responsibility—so you will observe, support, and practice skills that prepare you for a future career in service leadership.  Processes within that oversight include working with sales to provide timely service agreement pricing to customer support of sales through contract pricing on parts and service, field service coordination, technicians recruitment, training and development management of technicians, invoicing and collections, and customer satisfaction.

Where is the work:

This position has been designated as On-Site from the Grand Rapids, MI office location.

 

What you will learn:

  • Exposure to P&L management processes, revenue forecasting, and how service agreement growth strategies are developed.
  • Insight into budget control responsibilities, including how expenses are tracked against targets for overhead items such as fleet, uniforms, tools, and safety equipment.
  • Learn how risk mitigation is managed in service agreements, turnkey projects, and repair work.
  • Shadow the service coordination function to see how customer requests are prioritized, how technician skill levels are balanced, and how resources are allocated across the district.  This includes emergency repair, regular maintenance contracts, scheduled work and upgrades, installations, replacement components, and long-term service agreements.
  • Observe how service leaders attract, coach, and develop employees, gaining insight into effective leadership and training practices.  Drive continuous improvement through company performance management process and technical product training programs available.  Develop employee skill levels, including customer service, process and technical skills to the highest degree possible.
  • Gain awareness of how margin expectations, cash flow, and utilization are monitored and managed across service teams.   Ensure that standard service work processes are created and followed.  Improve transactional processes impacting the customer experience and increase overall customer satisfaction.
  • Learn about environmental, health, and safety compliance standards within service teams.  Provide training to all employees to ensure a safe and productive work environment both in the shop and at customer sites.
  • Travel to customer job sites may occur to observe service operations in real-world settings.  During the site visits, the employee may be exposed to variable weather conditions; moving mechanical parts; heights, and other variable environmental conditions based on location. 


 

What you will bring:

  • 5+ years experience in HVAC or a related field, technical systems (or equipment or skilled trades).
  • 3+ years experience managing and coaching large teams and organizing work schedules.
  • Project management skills to oversee and drive successful project execution for startups and customer requests.
  • Tech-savvy with expertise in Microsoft applications. Salesforce experience considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations included, but not limited to: DUI, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
  • We prioritize practical experience, relevant skills, and alignment with our leadership principles.

 

Compensation: This role is an unpaid SkillBridge internship. However, the base pay range for a fulltime Area Service Manager hire is between $100,000 - $140,000/ annually + local incentive plan.  Disclaimer: This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
