Where is the work:

Due to the nature of this role, this position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week.

 

What you will do:

  • Develop and Mentor: Influence and support the development of power electronic conversion modules (inverters, motor drives, power supplies, DC-DC converters) and their applications to enhance our products. Mentor other engineers as a subject matter expert in electronic modules.
  • Performance Evaluation: Evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic sub-systems and systems. Collaborate with other teams to develop and implement hardware design improvements and solutions to optimize designs.
  • Interface Circuitry Design: Design interface circuitry to integrate sensor technologies, creating products that reduce waste, are more energy-efficient, cost-efficient, and reliable, thereby improving our customers' uptime.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Support power electronic module testing and commissioning in laboratory or field settings using various test equipment. Engage with external third-party test laboratories as needed. Oversee lab test plans, test instructions, analyze and interpret results, and execute design updates based on the findings.
  • Troubleshooting and Analysis: Troubleshoot issues from board to system level in both virtual and prototype test units. Support root cause analysis for field issues and perform data reduction of complex analyses. Use the analysis to provide practical solutions and improvements to current and future designs.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain design documentation of system architectures, module requirements specifications, testing requirements, and software/hardware interactions.
  • Strategic Project Management: Work across the global Trane Technologies enterprise and its business product teams to define and manage key strategic projects to deliver new technologies.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate with product teams to understand customer needs and use cases to refine requirements while understanding system-level trade-offs. Identify areas of commonality to recommend enhancements to products as appropriate.
  • Intellectual Property: Disclose novel features to seek patents for intellectual property where appropriate.
  • Leadership and Reviews: Network across the organization and industry to identify and communicate opportunities to assess and apply next-generation technology to the product/services portfolio. Lead technology forums, take an active role in design reviews and provide advice for major projects within multiple Strategic Business Units (SBUs).
  • Cross-functional Interaction: Interact with purchasing, testing, manufacturing, design partners, and external suppliers as needed for projects. Develop strategies with global supply chain teams to define and support executive partnerships and bring new technologies to the company's platform teams.
  • External Partnerships: Leverage external partnerships to advance system integration optimization, EMI/EMC/Power quality enhancements at optimized costs, and more reliable products.
  • Travel: Travel as appropriate to collaborate across Trane Technologies and the supply base, approximately 10%.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in electrical, electronic engineering or related field. Master’s degree and/or PhD is preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience in systems requirements, analysis, design, and test experience, motor drives, DCDC converters, ACDC converters, , magnetics, and filters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of performing electrical components tests.
  • Experience with test software and equipment (e.g., power meter, spectrum analyzer, signal generator) along with evaluating customer and operational needs to define and coordinate cross-functional system performance requirements, ensuring compatibility of all physical and functional interfaces.
  • Experience with Simulation software, i.e. PLECs / SPICE and an understanding of Electrical system reliability concerns, failure modes, and corresponding avoidance/detection strategies.
  • Highly capable of performing independently and/or coordinating group efforts for complex, advanced engineering tasks.
  • Six Sigma belt, black belt preferred

Key Competencies:

  • Minimum:
    • Demonstrated capability to lead technical projects as a technology expert in the specified area, also providing key technical inputs to other teams.
    • Ability to drive requirements solicitation and decomposition to optimize design.
    • Leverage existing and disclose new  intellectual property.
    • Good understanding of relevant agency standards, regulations and best practices.
    • Experience with circuit simulation tools to screen out potential system interaction issues.  Examples are PLECs, Dymola, SPICE
    • Proficient in using test equipment such as dynamometer, oscilloscopes spectrum analyzers and power meters, etc., following the industry test standards.
    • Experience with prototyping, testing, modeling, and validating power electronic converters and their applications. Using multiple different types of power sources and different loads.
    • Six sigma robust design.  Able to conduct Design Of Experiments and statistical analysis
  • Desired:
    • Experience and familiarity working in a research-oriented environment.  Able to realize solutions using commercially viable components to accelerate development.
    • Professional experience of leading, mentoring or coaching other employees or teams.

Base Pay Range: $110,000 - $130,000
